Dimethyloctadecylamine Hydrochloride in Hookworm Disease

S. K. Sama, Masood A. K. Ghouri AND H. K. Chuttani
Gastroenterology Unit, Department of Medicine, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India

Dimethyloctadecylamine hydrochloride was shown to be a safe drug that is fairly effective in the treatment of hookworm infections with a single dose of 50 mg per kg of body weight. The rate of cure was 64% of 50 patients studied, and there was a significant reduction of worm load in another 30% of the cases.

The side-effects were mild and usually due to gastrointestinal irritation. They could be avoided by giving the drug with milk, food, or antacid agents, and were usually amenable to symptomatic treatment.
