Phlebotomus (Sand Fly) Fever Viruses in Hamster-Embryo Tissue Culture

Titration of infectivity of some members of the Phlebotomus-fever group of arbovirus was performed in hamster-embryo tissue culture. This was shown by the production of plaques under CMC overlay by all of the available viruses and by CPE production by some of them. The Naples virus produced no plaques or CPE in infected monolayers, but produced plaques when cells were infected in suspension and plated out to form monolayers under sodium carboxymethylcellulose overlay. It was suggested that some "wild" viruses may behave in a similar manner in susceptible cells; the application of this technique may help in their isolation.
