The erythrocytic stages of P. lophurae were maintained in vitro as the intracellular parasites in duck red-cell suspensions and as parasites removed from their host cells in a red-cell extract medium. Pyrimethamine, chloroquine, sulfadiazine, and quinacrine all had the expected inhibitory effect on parasites developing within their host erythrocytes. None of these drugs at the same concentrations inhibited the development of the extracellular parasites.
