Isolation of Japanese Encephalitis Virus from the Blood of a Child in Singapore*

Y. C. Chan AND T. F. Loh
Department of Bacteriology and Department of Pediatrics, University of Singapore, Singapore

The paper describes the clinical history and the isolation of a strain of Japanese encephalitis virus from the blood of a child. The virus was successfully re-isolated from the original acute phase serum and identified by complement-fixation, neutralization and hemagglutination inhibition antibody absorption tests. The etiological relationship of the virus to the patient's illness was established by the demonstration of complement-fixing, hemagglutination inhibition and neutralizing antibodies to the virus in the convalescent phase serum.
