A serological survey was carried out on human material collected in the tropical Atlantic lowlands of Southeastern Mexico. Seven hundred and seventy sera were investigated by hemagglutination-inhibition and neutralization tests for detecting Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) antibodies. The results obtained show that VEE virus, or possibly another closely related to it, is or has been present along the Atlantic lowlands of Southeastern Mexico, and that the human population of this region was exposed to the virus as early as 1961 and possibly even before. A serological conversion was found in a 10-year-old boy from Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, indicating recent viral activity. Clinical cases of VEE were not detected through this investigation.
