Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary

xxxvii +1724 pages, 24th edition, illustrated. W. B. Saunders Company, Philadelphia and London. 1965. $13.00 (deluxe edition, $17.00)

Ernest Carroll Faust
Department of Tropical Medicine & Public Health Tulane University School of Medicine New Orleans, Louisiana

The 1965 edition of Dorland differs in many respects from all of the earlier ones. To quote from the Preface, it incorporates the most changes "of all the editions in a sixty-five year period of service to biomedical scientists, students, and physicians." The title is changed to Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary in place of The American Illustrated Medical Dictionary, with W. A. Newman Dorland as editor, an editorial board of three, and two major contributors. The new volume lists 11 editorial consultants, of whom five are physicians, one an odontologist, and five specialists in biomedical sciences, classical languages and scientific publications. In addition, the names of 21 physicians, 11 dentists and 24 non-clinical contributors precede the table of contents. Emphasis is placed on "lexicographic principles" even to a greater extent than in earlier editions.
