Anisakis-Like Larvae Causing Eosinophilic Granulomata in the Stomach of Man

Four cases are reported in which a large nematode larva was found in an eosinophilic granuloma of the stomach surgically resected because of a clinical diagnosis of gastric ulcer or tumor. The larvae were identified as Anisakis-like on the basis of morphological characteristics of the parasite examined in the microsections. One of the four cases was reported previously as Ascaris larva but corrected in this paper as Anisakis-like larva.

It is presumed that the infections were acquired by eating raw marine fish and that similar infections may occur commonly in Japan, although neither the mode of infection nor the identification of the worm has been determined with certainty.
