Diagnostic Medical Mycology

by LEANOR D. HALEY, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Microbiology, Yale University School of Medicine; Director, Nancy Sayles Day Mycology Laboratory, Grace-New Haven Community Hospital, Yale-New Haven Medical Center. x + 204 pages, illustrated, paper back. Appleton-Century-Crofts, New York. 1964. $4.95

Department of Microbiology Harvard School of Public Health Boston, Massachusetts

This book was written expressly for bacteriologic technologists who are expected to carry out mycologic studies with a minimum of direction and training. They need a simplified technical reference which it was this author's intention to provide. The chapters on the collection and preparation of materials for culture and animal inoculation are excellent. However, this initial impact of excellence rapidly diminishes in subsequent chapters where there is needless repetition of the same material. This leaves the mycologically untrained with the erroneous impression that the various clinical specimens submitted for study—sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, bioptic material, etc.—must be treated and cultured in different ways for isolating each of the different systemic mycotic agents.

The author's aversion to specimens accompanied by the all-encompassing "Fungus Studies" request also leads to a fundamental error.
