This volume is based on the second (Russian) edition of Professor Valentin A. Dogiel's Allgemeine Parasitologie (1947), which has been enlarged and revised in Russian by two of his former students, Professor G. I. Poljanski and Professor E. M. Cheissin of Leningrad University, then translated into German by Frau Adelheid Peters and Doctor Günther Peters of East Berlin. As indicated in the Table of Contents, the material is presented in four sections: (I) Parasitism, its distribution and origin; (II) The adaptation of parasites to life in the body of their hosts, and their life cycles; (III) Animal parasites and their environment, and (IV) Interrelations between the parasite and host; the species problem with reference to the parasite. Each section contains a number of chapters, which in logical sequence present the facets of parasitism as a significant development in the world of living things.
