Effects of Bithionol against Paragonimus Kellicotti in Rats

Bithionol was highly effective against the lung forms of Paragonimus kellicotti in rats but was less effective against the immature worms in the pleural and peritoneal cavities. Rats treated by the diet administration of 70 to 155 mg/kg/day for 14 days had 88 percent fewer live worms in the lungs than did the controls. By gavage, the reduction in lung stages ranged from 100 percent with two 50 mg/kg doses daily for 10 days to 30 percent with one 25 mg/kg dose daily for 20 days. With comparable total amounts by gavage, the drug was significantly more effective when given twice daily for 10 days than once daily for 20 days. It had only marginal activity when administered subcutaneously over a wide range of doses.
