Techniques in Parasitology

First Symposium of the British Society for Parasitology, edited by ANGELA E. R. TAYLOR. viii + 107 pages, illustrated, paper back. F. A. Davis Company, Philadelphia. 1963. $3.25

The first symposium of the British Society for Parasitology was held on October 19, 1962, and four papers were presented. The intent of the symposium was to present research, utilizing techniques which might have wider application in the field of parasitology. A detailed review of the field was not the purpose of the presentations. Dr. R. H. Nimmo-Smith discussed "The application of biochemical techniques to parasitology." His presentation covered in vitro culture of parasites, techniques for quantitative study of cellular metabolism, techniques for histochemical localization of enzymes and biochemistry in relation to chemotherapy.

Dr. W. Mulligan discussed "The use of ionizing radiation and radioisotopes in parasitology." Work with Haemonchus contortus, Nippostrongylus muris (which should be designated as N. brasiliensis) and Dictyocaulus viviparis was outlined. Some of the variables encountered in irradiation procedures and use of radioisotopes were very adequately covered.

Dr. P. H. Silverman discussed in vitro cultivation and serologic techniques in parasitology.
