In keeping with our age of compact cars and homes, here is a compact volume on ophthalmic practice in the tropics. The book is not intended to be encyclopedic. The author covers only the more common eye lesions and problems that he has seen in his practice. These are well described, and he includes a good section on differential diagnosis in each chapter and his methods of treatment. The author has a refreshing, easily understood style of writing; actually it's as if he were just talking to the reader.

There are chapters on the tropical aspects of vitamin deficiencies, inflammatory condition of the conjunctiva and cornea, intestinal infections and on conditions almost exclusively tropical such as leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, filarial infections, yaws, etc. The reviewer has practiced ophthalmology in the tropics and he feels that the first two chapters on general and traumatic conditions are the most helpful to a newcomer to these areas.
