Isolation of Salmonella from Flies

Thelma De Capito
Communicable Disease Center, Public Health Service, U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Phoenix, Arizona

Isolations of Salmonella, other than S. typhi, from domestic flies have been reported infrequently. Floyd and Cook reported 2 isolations of S. typhimurium and 4 of S. typhi from 165 fly pools containing 3,900 flies.

Richards, Jackson, De Capito, and Maier reported isolations of Shigella from domestic flies and humans. The purpose of this note is to record 13 isolations of Salmonella obtained during that study from 3,263 pools of 65,273 flies. Isolations were made from primary SS plating media and no enrichment or other specific media for Salmonella were used.

Nine serological types of Salmonella were identified. S. typhimurium was isolated from 2 pools, S. anatum from 2 pools, and S. simsbury, S. typhi, S. panama, S. meliagridis, S. infantis, S. kentucky, and S. luciana once each from other pools.
