Development of a Vaccine Against Colorado Tick Fever for Use in Man

A purified Colorado tick fever (CTF) vaccine has been prepared from suckling mouse brain by adsorption on calcium phosphate and elution by sodium phosphate. Elution with 0.2 M Na2HPO4 yielded antigenic preparations low in protein and allergic encephalitis-producing properties, yet high in protective potency. Potency and sensitivity tests in man and laboratory animals indicate that safe and effective vaccines against CTF may be produced by this method. Preliminary data suggest that this method of purifying CTF virus may be applicable to other similar viruses.
