It is the aim of this book to consider radical changes which have occurred in the relative importance of various diagnostic, prophylactic and therapeutic measures in typhoid fever and to discuss them "in the light of present knowledge and that gained from treating personally [by the author] 1,300 cases of typhoid fever." The purpose is to "help those in the many parts of the world where typhoid is still prevalent, whether they be specialists, medical officers or nurses." The author recognizes that new and possibly controversial views are advanced but it appears in his book that his ideas are entitled to the respect commanded by intelligent experience and informed evaluation.

An outline of the history of typhoid and the classical picture of the disease are first presented and then enriched in some 30 succeeding chapters, by personal observations and experiences of typhoid in its every phase: diagnostic, clinical, prophylactic, therapeutic, epidemiologic, nursing, and with every conceivable complication possible in the tropics.
