Pyrvinium Pamoate in the Treatment of Strongyloidiasis

Edward D. Wagner
Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California

Pyrvinium pamoate was used in doses of 10 to 35 mg/kg/day for 3 to 5 days in the treatment of 34 confirmed cases of Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Follow-up stool examinations averaged in the majority of instances about three per patient during a 2-week period. Twenty-six of the patients had consistently negative stools after one course of treatment; 3 refractory cases were retreated and developed negative stools. The only indications of drug intolerance were abdominal pains in 3 patients. Further exploration of the drug in the therapy of strongyloidiasis is indicated.
