This is an excellent monograph on the subject of avian blood cells. Although the work is based primarily on the chicken, the authors investigated other species of birds and have pointed out pertinent differences where some confusion might arise. A thorough study of the various blood-cell types in the chicken should enable the investigator to identify these same cells in most avian species.
The book begins with a discussion of methods of studying blood cells; advantages and disadvantages of the various technics are given in detail. In the section on terminology the authors clearly define each cell type by means of a morphologic description. Circulating blood of the hatched chicken is the subject matter of the second chapter and is treated more comprehensively than those subjects included in the remaining chapters. Each series is considered in four categories: (1) normal mature cells, (2) normal immature cells, (3) abnormal cells, and (4) artifacts.
