Absorption of Vitamin B12 in Tropical Sprue

Julio V. Rivera AND R. Bernabe-Prida
Radioisotope and Medical Services, San Patricio Veterans Administration Hospital and School of Medicine, School of Tropical Medicine, University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico

The absorption of cyanocobalamin labelled with radioactive isotopes of cobalt was studied in 42 cases of tropical sprue. Impaired absorption was found in 34 patients. Abnormality was usually present even during clinical remissions of the disease. Absorption was not usually improved by the administration of intrinsic factor or calcium lactate.
