Fungi and Fungous Diseases represents the texts of 21 papers presented by 29 participants in the Eleventh Symposium of the Section of Microbiology of the New York Academy of Medicine. The Symposium honored three distinguished scientists, Drs. J. Gardner Hopkins, Bernard O. Dodge and Rhoda W. Benham, who were pioneers in the establishment of the first research laboratory devoted to medical mycology in the United States, the Mycology Laboratory at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

The papers presented in the Symposium are of high quality, they report new or recent investigations or review comprehensively aspects of medical mycology in which recent and important advances have been made. The volume is a useful reference book because of the obvious care with which the contributions were prepared. The book is well printed, although marred by occasional typographical errors. It is nicely illustrated and bound and it exemplifies and justifies a good symposium carefully organized and promptly reported.
