All persons having an interest in, or utilizing, the names of species of animals in their speech or writing will appreciate having for reference this modern, concise manual, which replaces the "Rules and Regulations" of the International Commission published in English in 1926 (Proc. Biol. Soc., Washington, 39: 74–104). The new "Code" is bilingual, with English and French versions side-by-side for convenient reference.

In addition to prefatory remarks the "Code" contains an explanatory note, a preamble and eighteen topic headings, including rules for forming correct names of animals (genus and species), the validity of a species name, how the name may be emended, what constitutes publication and authorship, the "type" concept as it concerns families, genera and species, and regulations governing the "Code." In addition, there are five Appendices which are helpful in getting to understand the applications of the "Code," a glossary of terms employed, and a good index.
