A case is presented of an undiagnosed Echinococcus cyst of the liver, which ruptured into the abdominal cavity and into the veins of the inferior caval system. Lesions found at autopsy included peritoneal dissemination of Echinococcus with multiple secondary cysts and tubercles (hydatid pseudotuberculous peritonitis); thrombosis in a few small pulmonary arteries, due to the hydatid cuticle; and large areas of brain infarction due to multiple emboli of small cysts and cuticular debris.
The cerebral embolism originating from a hydatid cyst of the liver is believed to be the first reported instance of this condition.
