This report serves, in part, the purpose of bringing together under one cover certain of the previously recorded accounts of the British experience with infective hepatitis both at home and abroad. Observations on the clinical course of disease, tests of hepatic function, hematologic alterations, and various experimental attempts to devise serologic tests as well as to transmit the disease to animals are well documented. In addition, the results of experiments in the transmission of hepatitis to volunteers are correlated with the observations made in other countries. Of new and special interest, however, is the section on epidemiology in which are discussed several aspects of the natural history of hepatitis as it occurred particularly among civilians from 194347 in a large and carefully studied area in England. The observations in this chapter supplement the information obtained from previous similar studies in Denmark and Sweden as well as earlier investigations in England.
