Effects of Feeding Colostrum Containing Coxiella Burnetii Antibodies to Newborn Calves of Two Categories

John F. Winn AND B. E. Elson
Communicable Disease Center, Public Health Service, Atlanta, Georgia and State of California Department of Agriculture, Sacramento, California

Colostrum containing complement-fixing antibodies against Coxiella burnetii was fed to new-born calves in two categories:

a) calves, which had not suckled, from serologically-positive dams, and
b) calves, which had not suckled, from serologically-negative dams.

Calves from serologically-negative dams did not develop specific antibodies over a period of one month following birth, whereas calves from serologically-positive dams developed specific antibodies during this period.

The possible source of such specific antibodies is discussed.
